So what should we poll???
Is this Pat Hyink? (spelling?) by Carol Mahoney on Jul 20, 9:37pm
I used to attend St. Paul's many years ago. I have since married and moved away, but I have many fond memories of MYF (now UMYF I think), mother and daughter banquets, Christmas Eve services, just to mention a few. I'm just wondering if this woman pictured here is the person I remember from many years ago? She had a daughter named Annie.
Pulled Pork (Submitted by Steve Pugh) by Steve Pugh on Aug 08, 10:15pm

The other best sandwich on the planet is, hands down, a pressed Cuban flatbread sandwich.  Also known as "The Real Reason George Foreman Invented That Grill" -

Sliced ham, Swiss cheese, and sweet pickles between two pieces of bread (a good sandwich roll with a little crunch to it), you scoop out a little of the bread on each side and slater the scooped out hollows with a mix of butter, garlic, and mustard (melt it all together in the microwave).  Lay on the ham, cheese, and pickles, press the sandwich down, and grill it in the grill (or in a pan under a heavy press or foil-wrapped brick) for three or four minutes per side (four minutes total in the GFG).

A very, very close second place!

Bonnie's Easy Trifle (Submitted by Bonnie Severson) by Marisa Castellucci on Jul 08, 9:36am
  • Spice Cake, baked in a sheet pan, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • Bananas, cut into bite-size pieces
  • Vanilla Pudding,Tapioca or Butterscotch, prepared
  • Whipped cream
  • Almonds

Any type of packaged cake works for this recipe. For instance, chocolate cake instead of spice cake and instead of bananas, use berries or any type of fruit that you like. The same goes for the pudding flavor.

Bake cake in a shallow pan and cut into 1 inch cubes. Cut fruit, prepare pudding and chop nuts. Line a pretty glass bowl or trifle bowl with cut-up cake, layer the pudding, fruit, whipped cream, nuts and repeat the layers until you reach the top of the bowl. Complete with whipped cream and nuts.

Refrigerate and serve.

Ariel's White Chocolate Cheesecake (Submitted by Morgan Pugh) by Marisa Castellucci on Jul 06, 9:48am
This recipe makes 2 full cheesecakes!  I've tried cutting this recipe in half, but that has never worked out well for me.

8 ounces white chocolate, melted
3 pounds cream cheese
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour
6 eggs
1 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon vanilla

Grease 2 10 inch springform pans
Preheat oven to 300 degrees
Mix cream cheese, sugar and flour until light & fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition (important step)
Scrape down bowl and add melted white chocolate*
While mixer is running at low speed, slowly add vanilla and heavy cream.  Blend well.
Poor mixture into springform pans.  Place cheesecake pans in a water bath filled with warm water.
Bake for 50 to 60 minutes until center of cheesecake is just firm.
Cool at room temperature for one hour.
Refrigerate until set before removing from pan.

*A good way to melt white chocolate is in glass bowl in microwave at half power for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between microwave sessions until chocolate is fully melted.

Sauce for topping

1 cup heavy cream
2 cups chocolate, finely chopped*
2 ounces orange liqueur

Place heavy cream in saucepan and bring to a boil.
Pour over chocolate and stir with a wooden spoon until melted.
Add orange liqueur and continue stirring until incorporated.
Poor over chilled cheesecake and serve.

*Use either white or dark chocolate, garnish with fresh raspberries.

What I really want to know is where is Morgan's recipe for cheesecake?
Rhonda's Caesar Salad (Submitted by Rhonda Yeager-Hutchinson) by Marisa Castellucci on Jul 05, 10:49am
There is not much to my recipe - just how it came to be and the fun way it was meant to be eaten.

Caesar Salad

Romaine Lettuce

Olive oil

Lemon juice

fround pepper

salt

Parmesan cheese

Croutons (Garlic flavored)

Named for a Tijuana chef who invented the salad in the 1920s. The strong romaine lettuce leaf is preferred because it is a salad traditionally meant to be eaten with the  fingers (great fun way for kids to get their veggies).

Wash the romaine thoroughly and dry well.

In a chilled bowl, add 1/2 cup Olive Oil and toss well with the leaves so that each leaf is coated.

Add 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper, and 2 tsp lemon juice

Toss again

Add croutons and parmesean cheese

Dustin, Damon, AND Franklin's favorite salad and way to eat it!!
Pulled Pork (Submitted by Steve Pugh) by Pastor Cheryl on Jul 03, 2:51pm

Enquiring minds want to know, Steve -- what's the other "top two" sandwich???

Pulled Pork (Submitted by Steve Pugh) by Marisa Castellucci on Jul 03, 8:15am
For the meat, you'll need either a smoker or an outdoor grill. I've only ever done this in a smoker, so if you're using a grill you'll want to check out the instructions for smoking with your grill. I will do some experimenting because I want to find a way to get as much of that smoked flavor with an oven - challenge! One other thing, I didn't do this Sunday but - the absolute BEST way to enjoy North Carolina pulled pork is on a hamburger bun, with a scoop of fresh coleslaw on top. It's easily one of the top two sandwiches on the planet.

Anyways, the recipes:

Meat
Two 4-4.5 lb. Pork butt or shoulder roasts, either boneless or bone-in.

Dry Rub

2 Tbs. salt
2 Tbs. sugar
2 Tbs. brown sugar
2 Tbs. cumin
2 Tbs. chili powder
2 Tbs. cracked black pepper
1 Tbs. cayenne pepper
1/4 c. paprika
Mix all of these together in a bowl. Rub all over the pork. This makes plenty, so you may want to put it straight into a jar and then pour out what you need and rub it onto the pork. Wrap the rubbed pork in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least a few hours, overnight is best. If you're using a grill, start soaking your wood chips in water when you refrigerate the pork.

Take the meat out of the refrigerator a half-hour before smoking. Get your smoker ready, or your grill and woodchips. Smoke the pork at 220 degrees for five hours. Next, wrap it in foil and put it in a 300 degree oven for another 2 to 2.5 hours. When it's ready, it'll fall apart if you so much as look at it like you're mad at it.

Remove the meat from the oven and let it rest for ten minutes. Remove and discard the foil, and pull the pork apart with a couple of forks. I like to slice off some of the outer smokey crusty bits and chop them up finer, to mix back in with the pulled stuff.

Sauce

2 c. cider vinegar
1 1/3 c. water
5/8 c. ketchup
1/4 c. firmly packed brown sugar
5 tsp. salt
4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. white pepper
Mix all of these ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring until everything dissolves. Turn off the heat. Toss the pork in this sauce and you're all set! If you put it all in a slow cooker, it only gets better.

Choir Practice by Marisa Castellucci on May 02, 8:02pm
We will have choir & practices this Thursday, May 3rd, beginning with choir at 7:15. We will be going over an "instant" anthem for Sunday, of "One bread, one body", with a little of "Fill my cup Lord" written in. I believe we can easily present this, as they are songs we all know. 95% unison. Bells, we do have practice Sunday after church. Note: Bells and choir will have Mother's Day "off". Praise team will play before service. We will be having a special guest that day, who will sing in the music ministry slot and offertory, and play piano along with me on the hymns...so it's piano & organ that day! (John Paul Jackson, the tuner, who will also give us our piano a once-over early that morning). See everyone at practice and on Sunday!! Richard

Jack Roebuck, by Marilyn White on Feb 01, 10:32am
My first introduction to Jack was at a card-party get together at Halloween, many years ago...........it was a bit wild, (we did wild rather well, in those days). My husband Joe kept saying, 'this is your little card club?'

Jack and Joann were dating, at the time, and I think she wanted a few of her friends to meet him. She had made 'Raggedy ann and andy costumes for them both, and he wore his 'Andy' costume proudly..........I remember thinking at the time that any man who would do such a thing for his lady had to be okay and 'crazy about the girl'.....................and so it was.

At their 25th anniversary party, there were no Ann and Andy costumes, but the same people were there who had attended the first party. (and I have the picture on my wall, to prove it).

Your memories have to be special Joann, (as are mine, and perhaps, down the road, we can gather up a few more).

God bless you all................................Miss lemon-crud, herself (private joke).

Welcome by Douglas Bostrand on Jun 19, 8:56am
Dear Pastor Cheryl,
Welcome to St. Pauls!

Warm Regards,
Douglas Bostrand
welcome home by Marilyn White on Jun 13, 11:03am
Dear Pastor Cheryl,
You are coming to a 'most wonderful' place, and you could not be more welcome. We are a fairly small group, but we are mighty and have an awesome track record.

I have been a member of St. Paul's for about 10 years, I came to say 'goodbye' to Jim Hamilton on his last Sunday, and just never left.

I am a former chair of Pastor/Parish, and am now on the Board of Trustees along with the bell choir. (we make a joyful noise).

I also have been involved with the Redondo Fire Department CERT program (Community emergency response team). Several of our parishioners have taken the classes, with the thought that, should the need arise, St Paul's is centrally located for the neighborhood, and would be a great place to 'link up' with the separated families. The more of us who are prepared to help ourselves and others in an emergency, the better service we can offer for the community.

I must tell you, that you will be most welcome, and I, personally look forward to meeting you.

Best, Marilyn White
Welcome! by Darlene Wanda Ockerman on Jun 13, 9:20am
Welcome to our church. It is quite an incredible place. I searched for 6 years to find a church that suited my needs and beliefs, and one of my students told me about St. Pauls (Sarah Payne). It's a great story. Before that I had been a lifelong Lutheran. I truly believe you will be very happy here.
I will not meet you until July 23rd. I arrive home from a study tour of China/Japan on the 17th.
I am a retired Superior Court Judge, and now a teach at West Hight School in Torrance, as well as being the Vice-President of the Torrance Teachers Assoc. and a State Council Member of the California Teachers Association. I am also on the Board of Trustees. I look forward to working with you Cheryl.
