Blessings to one and all! May we find each other in God’s kingdom in peace and love for all.
So how are we all doing in our season of Lent? Often, we are consumed by the idea of giving something up for Lent, that we forget that Lent is a time to grow closer to God. Now we all could give up a few things for Lent and wouldn’t hurt so much, but what if we were to take on something new instead. Taking on something new with our relationship with God to strengthen that relationship might be the way to go.
In the last few weeks during Lent, I have seen some newness within our congregation at work. We have greeted new members, or prospective members with renewed grace. Our coffee chats after service are more lively. I have been complimented on how approachable and active our group has been towards new people. More than once I have been told, that is just what we have been looking for in a church.
Newness, a descriptive term yet reflective of what St. Paul’s has always been. Churches are typically slow to change. The traditions and rituals of Christians are important and a desired part of worship. That should never change. But when we make a commitment during Lent to grow closer to God, we are asked by God to strengthen our relationship with each other, thereby growing closer to God.
In the next few months, we are going to honor a number of people who guided this church with their love and grace that continues to be the light that we carry forward each week. We hope to remind ourselves that at one time, a newness was needed and someone took up that challenge and lead us closer to God. We want to celebrate our history and at the same time celebrate our future with the same grace and love that has led us all closer to God.
Nothing says, we can’t have a little fun in doing just that. So join us, laugh with us, pray with us and grow those relationships with each other and God always.
If you have any stories or reflections on our past or even our future please feel free to share with me. As I am completing my third year, I am honored to be your Pastor and embrace the history of this church as my guide in the future.
May God bless all who come through the doors of St. Paul’s and all who are in this wonderful community.
Pastor John Stephenson
